Mountains and nature in the Bernese Oberland

Back to the overview

The Jungfraujoch «Top of Europe»
Snow and ice 100% guaranteed! The Sphinx observation building, the Ice Palace, the plateau for walks in the eternal snow - these are year-round attractions on the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe. The Ice Gateway connects the Ice Palace with the glacier plateau. In the sheltered building you can feel the high alpine mountain world at close quarters in all weather and seasons. An unforgettable day trip with Europe's highest railway to the high alpine wonderland at 3454 metres above sea level is the highlight of every Swiss trip.

The Schilthorn – Piz Gloria
The Schilthorn, the aerial cableway and the steep snowy slopes formed the setting for the most exciting scenes in the James Bond film "In Her Majesty's Secret Service". The incomparable location, the dramatic view of icy four-thousand-metre peaks and the fact that a modern cable car leads up to the imposing summit house, all these factors prompted the United Artists' experts to select the Schilthorn for their purposes.

Mountain Niesen and the longest staircase in the world
The Niesen is the perfect pyramid on Lake Thun and a well-known place of power. The funicular takes you up to 2336 metres above sea level. If you prefer to climb stairs, 11,674 steps await you along the track of the Niesenbahn. According to the "Guinness Book of Records" the Niesen stairs are the longest stairs in the world. From Niesen Kulm, you have a fantastic panoramic view of the Bernese Alps, the Simmen and Fruit Valleys and Lake Thun. The Niesen Kulm mountain inn is well known for its gastronomic and cultural events.

The Niederhorn
In summer, the Niederhorn invites you to go hiking, scooter-biking and game viewing. In winter, the toboggan run is very popular, and numerous cable car tracks and the small ski area are easily accessible by car or by train and bus.

The Stockhorn
The Stockhorn adventure world offers many possibilities in summer and winter. From Erlenbach you can reach the top station in 20 minutes by cable car. 200 mountain peaks can be admired from the panorama restaurant.

St. Beatus Caves
On the eastern shores of Lake Thun, between Thun and Interlaken, the St. Beatus Caves extend inside the massive Niederhorn massif. This impressive natural wonder, formed over millions of years, served, according to legend, as a safe haven for St. Beatus in the 6th century. In the 18th century, the picturesque pilgrims' path was the only access, today the St. Beatus Caves can be reached easily by boat and by road. The pilgrims' path forms part of the Way of St. James and is one of the most popular hiking trails in the Bernese Oberland.
